During our November board meeting, the question was posed: what are you most proud of in the last decade? My mind swirled. How can I pick one thing? The word fullness came to mind. I have a full life.
In ten years we’ve welcomed 5 children into our home, weathered more than one major life-storm, gained a few pounds between us, and watched an idea grow into a movement. I know I’m supposed to say kids, but honestly, I’m most proud of YOU.
I’m proud of the work we are doing together, of the lives we are touching, and of the way we choose to conduct ourselves in the world of child welfare. We are different than most. We keep coming back to an often-thankless job. We push through personal triggers and gnawing heartache to sign up the next day so those kids can have some consistency. We use our personal networks and social capital to fill gaps where we see them, so that every child entering care has exactly what he or she needs. We care harder than any other group of people I know.
And I’m so proud of that.
Today and every day I am thankful for you, our incredible volunteers. I wish you warm holidays, respite from your troubles, and strength to keep serving.
Blessings to you,
Sarah Desjarlais, Executive Director
