Community Collaborates for Innovative App to Better Serve Foster Children
[Vancouver, WA] – Office Moms & Dads, a local nonprofit serving children entering foster care, has been awarded a $25,000 Focus Grant from the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington. These funds will be leveraged with in-kind work from Hint Consulting (a local software developer) to create and implement an app that will greatly enhance the organization’s ability to orchestrate and support volunteers working with foster kids.
Office Moms & Dads (OMD) was founded as a grassroots effort to fill a real, tangible need for childcare within the child welfare agencies. By training and supporting local volunteers, OMD offers children a safe, loving environment during one of the most traumatic times in their lives – the hours between being taken from an abusive or neglectful situation and being placed into foster care. The value of OMD is exponential; providing nurturing care to children, relieving an over-burdened social welfare system, and providing volunteers a chance to make a difference for kids.
No longer a grassroots organization, OMD now has offices in 20 agencies across Washington and one in Idaho. Last year alone, OMD served more than 700 children through the help of 500+ volunteers across the states, and 165 of those children were served right here in Clark County.
With the use of custom software, OMD will reduce time spent on daily operations and refocus those efforts on building community relations. OMD will have the ability to streamline volunteer coordination, more accurately track volunteer hours and number of children served and recruit a more diverse pool of volunteers to better serve children.
In conversation with CEO Ben Wood from Hint Consulting, Ben said, “Our mission at Hint is not only to make better software, but to make the world a better place. When Office Moms & Dads (OMD) met with us to talk about how an app would allow volunteers to spend more time serving kids and less time managing schedules, we literally couldn’t wait to get involved. In addition to donating a portion of our consulting time, we’re helping OMD rally other software developers in the community that are looking for an opportunity to give back. We care deeply about the work that OMD is doing, and feel it is a cause worth investing in.”
Office Moms & Dads is a movement. It is a call to action and a solution for filling the gaps of an overburdened system, allowing loving adults to step in and make a difference for kids.
To be a part of this great organization, we encourage you to get involved or make a donation.
