Murdock Funds Local Nonprofit Startup Serving Foster Kids Throughout Washington
[Vancouver, WA] – Five years ago, right here in Vancouver, WA, Sarah Desjarlais, a local foster parent and community activist, found herself in a meeting at the child welfare office planning a celebration for foster youth who would soon be graduating from high school. As she worked, she looked around and saw foster children within the agency sitting alone or running around, a social worker frantically trying to keep up while working diligently to find a foster family placement. Sarah knew there had to be a better way.
Office Moms & Dads (OMD) was founded as a grassroots effort to fill a real, tangible need for childcare within the child welfare agencies. By training and supporting local volunteers, Office Moms & Dads offers children a safe, loving environment during one of the most traumatic times in their lives – the hours between being taken from an abusive or neglectful situation and being placed into foster care. The value of Office Moms & Dads is exponential; providing nurturing care to children, relieving an over-burdened social welfare system, and providing volunteers a chance to make a difference for kids.
No longer a grassroots organization, Office Moms & Dads now has offices in 20 agencies across Washington and one in Idaho, serving nearly 600 children through over 1,200 volunteer hours in 2017 alone.
In August, 2018, OMD received a $40,000 grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust to begin formalizing fundraising efforts and strategically build a model for sustainable, strategic growth. Growth for the organization within the next 5 years includes:
- 1) Expanding OMD to 15 additional child welfare sites across Washington (75% growth)
- 2) Expanding OMD to 18 additional child welfare sites in Idaho
- 3) Hire and sustain a staffing structure that can meet the demands and needs of all kidsentering foster care throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Office Moms & Dads is a movement. It is a call to action and a solution for filling the gaps of an overburdened system, allowing loving adults to step in and make a difference for kids.
To be a part of this great organization, we encourage you to get involved or make a donation.
